years old (Blakemore et al., 2016). The history of iron mining dates to before 1844 when bog iron ores were mainly found in swampy areas (Armah et al., 2012). These low-grade bog iron ores mostly consist of goethite (FeO(OH)) and contain less than 30% (by weight) of iron metal, which limited the growth of iron mining in these areas (Olson, 1951).
